Horrific Scene Unfolds as Neighbors Discover Slain Family Following Court Marriage Dispute

SKARDU, Pakistan — When Akhtar Ali Khan walked the 200 meters to his cousin’s house on a crisp Friday morning in Skardu, he expected to help take a sick two-year-old girl to the local hospital. Instead, he walked into one of the most horrific crime scenes in the modern history of Pakistan’s high-altitude Gilgit-Baltistan region.

The front gate of the home sat unusually ajar. On the concrete floor of the porch, a dark, thick trail of blood dragged toward the inner living quarters—a stark sign that someone had been critically injured and pulled inside.

When Khan opened the bedroom door, the nightmare unfolded: 30-year-old Muhammad Aslam lay dead on the floor. On the bed lay his wife, Hania, along with their four-year-old son, Mehdi, and two-year-old daughter, Zehra.

All four had had their throats slit with a heavy, sharp-edged weapon.

“I immediately notified the police and Aslam’s family, and then I lost consciousness,” Khan recalled, recounting the trauma of discovering his relatives. “For hours, I couldn’t process what I had witnessed.”

Local law enforcement officials suspect the slaughter, which took place on the night of October 29, is a calculated "honor killing"—a brutal execution triggered by the couple’s decision to defy familial expectations and contract a court marriage six years ago.

A Hunted Life

For six years, Muhammad Aslam, who worked long night shifts at a local pizza outlet, lived under the shadow of retaliation.

After marrying Hania against her family’s consent, the couple fled their former base in Karachi and settled in the quiet, mountainous enclave of Skardu, hoping the remote geographic terrain would shield them from vendetta. According to court records and testimonies, Hania’s family had filed criminal kidnapping charges against Aslam in Karachi shortly after the marriage. Hania subsequently appeared before a Skardu magistrate, giving a sworn statement that she had married Aslam of her own free will.

Yet, safety proved illusory.

“Aslam repeatedly told me he could never return to Karachi because his life was in constant danger,” said Muhammad Iqbal, a local advocate and childhood friend who represented Aslam in legal matters. “They were deeply devoted to each other and just wanted to raise their young children in peace.”

A Calculated Ambush

Crime scene reconstruction by police investigators points to a methodical, cold-blooded ambush.

Investigators believe the assailants breached the household late Thursday evening while Aslam was still at work. They executed Hania and the two young toddlers first, leaving them on the bed. The killers then waited in the dark for Aslam to return from his restaurant shift.

When Aslam entered the courtyard around midnight, he was attacked on the porch. Bleeding heavily, he was dragged into the bedroom where his family lay dead, before being executed.

Before fleeing, the attackers used the victims' blood to scrawl cryptic messages across a ceramic plate inside the room—a gruesome signature intended to mark their vengeance.

“In my decades of police service across various districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, I have never witnessed an act of violence this barbaric, where innocent toddlers were slaughtered without an ounce of mercy,” said Salahuddin, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Skardu.

Regional Outrage and Manhunt

News of the quadruple murder sent shockwaves across the northern territory, prompting widespread protests in Skardu. Hundreds of local residents took to the streets, demanding immediate justice and lambasting the persistent curse of honor-based violence.

Following a complaint filed by Aslam’s brother, Khadim Hussain, Skardu Police formally registered a murder case nominating Hania’s father, brothers, and uncle as primary suspects.

Police intelligence indicates the nominated suspects belong to Karachi and the Parachinar region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Special law enforcement teams have been dispatched across provincial borders, conducting coordinated raids to track down the fleeing suspects.

While local authorities vow swift prosecution, the tragic end of Aslam, Hania, and their two young children serves as a grim reminder of how far the shadows of traditional honor codes can reach, even into the quietest corners of the Himalayas.
