Faisalabad: November 3, 2026 (DIGITAL ITLA) — Widespread student protests erupted at Government College University (GCU) Faisalabad following controversial reports and administrative directives proposing the deletion or omission of the word “University” from the institution’s official name.

According to details, a large number of students staged demonstrations across the campus premises, raising slogans against any move aimed at altering the historic identity and statutory charter of GCU Faisalabad. The protesting students argued that removing the designation "University" undermines the academic prestige of the varsity and creates grave uncertainty regarding the national and international accreditation of their degrees.

Student representatives asserted that rather than strengthening the academic infrastructure and research autonomy of the institution, steps compromising its identity are deeply detrimental to the student body's future. They warned that if the proposal is not immediately rescinded, the student community will expand their agitation to peaceful sit-ins and academic boycotts across the division.

The protesters appealed to the Governor of Punjab (Chancellor), Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) leadership to intervene immediately to protect the university’s status and preserve the institutional title of GCU Faisalabad.
