Ebola Virus Wreaks Havoc in Congo; Death Toll Rises to 438

03 July 2026

(Digital Itla) The deadly Ebola virus continues to wreak havoc in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as cases steadily rise, creating an increasingly alarming situation. According to the latest report released by the DRC Ministry of Health, the total number of deaths from the Ebola virus has reached 438. The report further detailed that the total number of infected individuals has risen to 1,406.

Congolese medical authorities stated that surveillance and screening protocols have been tightened in affected regions to halt the further spread of the virus, ensure early detection of new cases, and immediately place them in quarantine. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) noted that this Ebola outbreak is spreading across Africa's busiest border regions, where thousands of people travel daily for safety, livelihoods, medical treatment, and family reunification. Understanding human mobility patterns is one of the most effective tools for curbing the spread of the disease. The IOM has screened more than 1 million people so far and is expanding its operations across both affected nations. According to IOM Senior Regional Advisor Cut Laving, screening remains ongoing at border checkpoints, major highways, and travel routes, with support being provided at more than 110 points of entry and exit.
