Trump Threatens Europe with 100% Tariffs

27 June 2026

(Digital Itla) US President Donald Trump has warned European countries that if the European Union does not reduce tariffs on American products and if no progress is made in trade negotiations, the United States may consider imposing up to 100% tariffs on European imports. According to media reports, this statement is seen as a sign of further escalation in trade tensions between the US and the EU.

Trump stated that his administration aims to protect American industries, particularly the automobile, steel, aluminum, and agricultural sectors, from unfair trade policies. According to him, if the EU does not further open its market to US exports, strict retaliatory measures will be taken. Expressing concern over the threat, the European Union stated that it wants to resolve the dispute through negotiations; however, if the US unilaterally imposes heavy tariffs, the EU could also impose retaliatory duties on American products. According to economists, if the US genuinely implements 100% tariffs on European goods, trade between the US and Europe could be severely impacted. Prices of vehicles, machinery, wine, luxury goods, and other imported items could rise significantly. Furthermore, uncertainty could grow across global supply chains and financial markets, threatening to negatively impact global economic growth.
