US Eases Travel Restrictions for Iran's World Cup Football Team

24 June 2026

(Digital Itla) The United States has partially relaxed travel restrictions for Iran’s national football team, allowing the squad to enter the country two days prior to their FIFA World Cup match. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, the Iranian team has been granted special permission for entry ahead of their upcoming fixture. Iran is scheduled to play against Egypt on Friday, and the squad will depart from the Mexican city of Tijuana for Seattle on Wednesday.

The Department of Homeland Security clarified that this relaxation is strictly meant to facilitate participation in the tournament, meaning the Iranian team must exit the US immediately following the conclusion of the match, with no extension of stay permitted. US officials added that during the first two matches of the tournament, the Iranian team was only permitted to enter the US one day prior, but this window has now been extended to two days to facilitate travel arrangements. The White House FIFA Task Force stated that this limited relaxation was approved after reviewing the administrative efficiency and complete adherence to rules during the team's first two visits. Notably, the US had initially rejected Iran's request to enter two days early, but later adjusted its policy after evaluating the circumstances, providing the Iranian squad with limited additional travel flexibility.
