Lure of Online Income: Younger Generation Falling into Dangerous Trap of Exploitation

23 June 2026

(Digital Itla) Driven by financial hardships or the illusions of social media, youth are increasingly heading down a dangerous path of explicit content commercialization. With social media flooded with explicit material, the younger generation is getting trapped in a web of blackmail and psychological distress. Spurred by the lure of monetization, accounts managed by mothers have become hazardous for underage girls.

Furthermore, the blind system of programmatic advertising prioritizes users over content, pushing advertising strategies on social media to cast moral boundaries aside. According to details, youth worldwide, under the influence of rising financial difficulties, family pressure, and the unrealistic standards of social media, are leaning toward a dangerous trend. By engaging in the business of explicit photos and videos, they are not only risking their private lives but are also facing severe threats like blackmail, exploitation, and psychological ruin. Concurrently, advertising companies, intentionally or unintentionally, are providing financial lifelines to these very platforms that promote this unethical and criminal network, giving rise to a complex global crisis.

According to experts, a major driver of this trend is the modern digital advertising system, particularly programmatic advertising, where machine-learning algorithms automatically distribute ads across various websites. In this process, companies often have no idea which platforms their ads are appearing on, inadvertently associating their brand with obscene or exploitative content. However, some companies deliberately choose such platforms due to lower costs. In these advertising strategies, the primary focus is given to the target audience rather than the quality of the content. If a website’s users match a brand’s target demographic, companies do not hesitate to advertise there, even if the content on that platform is morally or legally controversial. This attitude is making the problem far more complex and dangerous. Investigations have also revealed that Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has failed to take effective action on several serious reports, as brands increasingly become facilitators for unethical websites.
