Out of Respect for the Holy Words, Saudi Arabia's Flag is Not Laid on the Ground in FIFA World Cup
17 June 2026
(Digital Itla) During the FIFA World Cup 2026, instead of being spread on the ground like the flags of other nations, Saudi Arabia's national flag was specially hoisted at an elevated position, drawing worldwide attention. Generally, under FIFA's pre-match protocols, the flags of participating countries are spread out on the ground; however, a different approach was adopted for Saudi Arabia's flag. The primary reason for this is the Kalima Tayyaba inscribed on the Saudi flag, which represents the core belief of Islam. According to Saudi laws and religious traditions, placing the national flag on the ground, walking on it, or using it in any manner that implies disrespect is considered highly inappropriate. Keeping this sensitivity in mind, the tournament administration installed the Saudi flag at a designated and elevated position instead of placing it on the ground to maintain its sanctity and respect.
