(Digital Itla) A major upset was witnessed in the FIFA World Cup when European champions Spain were forced to settle for a goalless draw against World Cup newcomers Cape Verde. In this Group H match played in Atlanta, Spain was considered the clear favorite; however, Cape Verde displayed an outstanding defensive game to stop their strong opponents from scoring. The Spanish team maintained 74% ball possession during the match and launched numerous attacks, but they failed to break through Cape Verde's defensive wall. Spain's coach, Luis de la Fuente, also brought on Barcelona's young star Lamine Yamal in the second half, but he too could not bring success to the team. On the other side, Cape Verde's players and fans celebrated the result heavily, treating it as equivalent to a victory. It is worth noting that due to FIFA increasing the number of teams from 32 to 48, this peninsula country with a population of 525,000 got the opportunity to participate in the World Cup for the first time.
