(Digital Itla) China's Ministry of State Security has claimed that foreign intelligence agencies are using "spy" animals equipped with sensors to monitor China's territorial waters and surrounding marine areas. Describing the situation as an "invisible secret war," Beijing warned that various marine animals, including "spy turtles" and "spy fish," are being used to gather sensitive information and create underwater threats. According to the ministry, various advanced spying devices have also been deployed for this purpose. Chinese officials state that these animals collect real-time information regarding the sensitive marine environment, including water temperature, salinity, and ocean currents, and then transmit it abroad via satellite. The ministry noted that certain buoys equipped with meteorological sensors were also discovered, which were capable of tracking the sounds or acoustic signatures of Chinese submarines in real time. However, the ministry did not specify where the alleged spy animals were found or which country or organization had deployed them. The statement also mentioned a new technology called "Wave Gliders," which are powered by solar energy and wave motion, capable of transmitting military-grade marine environmental data and vessel activity information. According to Chinese officials, hidden underwater lighthouses were also discovered on the ocean floor in 2024, which could be used to guide foreign submarines and prepare for potential military operations. The ministry stated that highly sensitive marine regions like the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait are prime targets for this type of covert espionage. The Chinese government has announced rewards ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 Yuan for fishermen who identify and report such spying equipment. Notably, in 2023, the UK also revealed that Russia had deployed trained bottlenose dolphins at its Black Sea naval base in Sevastopol, Crimea.
