Iran Orders Closure of Strait of Hormuz, Threatens to Target Passing Vessels

11 June 2026

(Digital Itla) The Supreme Joint Military Command of Iran has officially issued an order to shut down the Strait of Hormuz to all maritime traffic, completely blocking commercial vessels and oil tankers. According to the Iranian state news agency, Mehr News, the military command warned that any vessel attempting to traverse the Strait of Hormuz will be aggressively targeted.

The Strait of Hormuz stands as one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, handling a vast percentage of the global oil trade; consequently, this blockade is expected to deal a severe blow to global energy supply chains and commercial trade routes. Iranian authorities stated that this extreme decision was made in light of the ongoing military escalations and security threats, raising deep international concerns over a wider regional crisis.
