Lebanese Army Chief Visits Pakistan at Field Marshal Asim Munir's Invitation; Significant Progress Expected on Ceasefire

(Digital Itla) The head of the Lebanese Armed Forces, General Rudolf Haikal, is set to arrive in Pakistan on an important official visit. This visit comes at a time when Israeli military operations persist in Lebanon, and Pakistan is actively engaged in diplomatic communications and mediation efforts between Iran and the United States. According to a statement issued by the Lebanese military, General Rudolf Haikal departed for Pakistan at the invitation of Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. However, the Lebanese military has not released details regarding the duration of the visit or the scheduled meetings.

This visit takes place as the mid-April ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel faces severe strain. According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli attacks since March 2 have left 3,593 people dead and over 10,990 injured. Concurrently, playing a diplomatic role in the region, Pakistan remains active in facilitating communication and reducing tensions between Iran and the United States. Observers note that the situation in Lebanon, the Iran-US dialogue, and other regional conflicts are deeply interconnected. Recently, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that a permanent ceasefire in Lebanon is a crucial component of any potential agreement between Iran and the United States. However, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged Iran not to use southern Lebanon as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Washington.

Notably, the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28 this year, leading to a significant escalation of tension in the region. According to Iranian authorities, over 3,000 people have been killed in Iran during this conflict, while Tehran has carried out retaliatory strikes against US and Israeli targets. A temporary ceasefire was achieved on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but the talks stalled a few days later. Subsequently, the United States increased pressure and sanctions on Iranian ports, particularly facilities near the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, following recent talks in Washington, the United States, Lebanon, and Israel issued a joint declaration expressing a commitment to strengthening the ceasefire and reducing border tensions. Analysts believe that the Lebanese Army Chief's visit to Pakistan carries immense weight against the backdrop of ongoing diplomatic activities and efforts for peace and stability in the Middle East.
